How do the signs and symbols in the Pit change throughout the course of the day?

- Nicole, Meghan, Rob, Nate and Allison are all in Dr. Gaffney's Urban Social Geography class at UNC-Chapel Hill and are doing a project to see how the signs and symbols change through the Pit (the central location of campus) throughout the day. Interviews, photos and observations are all going to be key in determining how this socio-space is used and changes over an 11-hour period from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
What do we mean by "signs and symbols?"
Textual:
Signs and symbols that are written ways of passing along information such as posters, advertisements, names on buildings or anything else that can communicate a message.
Non-textual:
Signs and symbols that allow one to associate certain elements with a certain place without explictly being told. These can include tables (showing that it's a gathering area), brick steps (allow the Pit to be recognized easily) and the two trees in the center of the Pit.
